Economic Burden of Chronic Disease

The Milken Institute has released a new study, "An Unhealthy America: The Economic Burden of Chronic Disease: Charting a New Course to Save Lives and Increase Productivity and Economic Growth." The study looks at the economic loss chronic disease places on our nation and how much worse this burden could become in the coming decades. Chronic diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer, are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. These conditions shorten lives and reduce productivity in the workplace along with damaging the overall quality of life. In California, the cost of treating these conditions totaled $26.9 billion in 2003. The total cost of lost productivity was $106.2 billion. Although chronic diseases are among the most common and costly health problems, they are also among the most preventable. Reasonable improvements in preventing and managing chronic disease could impact California's economic health by $117 billion in 2023. This includes $98 billion saved in increased productivity and $19 billion from reduced treatment spending. The study is available at the Milken Institute Web site. ***********************
